5 things this month for Women in Sports for Social Change
Hi Ladies,
As the year draws to a close, this is a short thank you for engaging with a year’s worth of monthly issues of this W.I.S.S.C. newsletter, with a staggering 75% open rate (when 20-30% is considered a solid benchmark by most). There are also now over 200 women accepted in our private LinkedIn group, where I welcome you to share insights, seek advice and participate in discussions.
For as long as people find it helpful, I will also continue in-person quarterly happy hours in Washington, D.C. and who knows where else in 2025. I’ve heard from some of you wanting to get together in Chicago, NYC and LA - would love to see it happen!
This entire grassroots initiative stemmed from a desire to connect with, learn from and support other women who care about the power of sports and specifically its ability to drive social change. An acronym following the likes of WISE, WIST and others, but ultimately its founding story is inspired by S.P.I.C.E.D. What the heck is “SPICED” you ask? It’s the ‘Society for Prevention of Insanity through Chatting, Eating and Drinking’ that my mom and her friends started some 40+ years ago* (see below) as a monthly ladies dinner and continue to this day on the 2nd Wednesday of the month.
I love you, mom, and love all of you reading this for everything you do to continue to use sports for good. You are WISSC.
If you need a quick, feel-good watch between now and 2025, check out this 25-minute short film about a fan who helped inspire a city. I know, I know, it's Philly sports, but trust me it's good and also the Obamas produced it.
Cheers to all of you ladies, the Women in Sports for Social Change - thanks to all who joined in DC at last week's happy hour!
If you have a woman who you'd like to nominate to be featured in a future issue - alongside women featured this year from ESPN to the LA Dodgers Foundation - please reach out to me.
*If you read this far, the asterisk was in reference to this photo of a local news story about my mom's S.P.I.C.E.D. group of her and her friends, published in Feb. 1989 in a newspaper that no longer exists.
Thanks for reading and being part of this community.
