3 things this month for Women in Sports for Social Change
Hi ladies,
It’s the second Wednesday of the month, and today I’m bringing you a double issue of WISSC.
This is a combined Jan/Feb edition, to help power through the winter.
I’m also leaning in to bringing you a more concise read, so in 2025 I’ve streamlined from five things to three things in each issue. I’ll be mixing it up in each issue, sharing various events, resources, job listings and hopefully ongoing community and inspiration.
I sincerely appreciate the feedback so many of you have offered, and love seeing the ongoing commentary in the WISSC LinkedIn group. Given everything happening in the world right now, seeing connections and fostering community matters.
Amidst my Eagles winning the Super Bowl (!!!!), the number of ads during the big game on Sunday featuring women in sports was powerful. ICYMI, from the "So Win" spot by Nike to the NFL girl’s flag football spot and even the “These Legs” spot by Dove on keeping girls in sports, there were women in sports for social change all over the biggest night in sports; (also, S/O Serena at halftime!).
2. What to watch for:
Hope to see many of you next Thursday, Feb. 20 in Washington D.C. for the annual GW Sports Philanthropy Summit this year hosted by Monumental Sports & Entertainment.
3. Woman to watch:
Rather than highlight a single voice in this issue, shouting out so many women, and all those who identify as women, who were using their voices last Wednesday during the annual NGWSD - National Girls & Women in Sports Day. Inclusion is as important now as ever. A simple but powerful piece of wisdom I heard on that day here in D.C. was a comment by the CEO of the Women’s Sports Foundation, Danette Leighton, as she moderated a panel of powerhouse women. She spoke about how even though she gets told “no” numerous times a day, she knows it’s important to keep going. She speaks with potential donors and continues to advocate even amidst inevitable challenges. Put another way, by yet another fierce woman in sports and social change who said to me last week: “Alas, the fight is never over!”
P.S. For anyone interested, I’ve also started dabbling with a new substack called spurpose, sharing dailyish stories and updates at the intersection of sports + purpose, because the business of sports includes the business of being human.
Thanks for reading and being part of this community.
