W.I.S.S.C. Monthly Minute

3 things this month for Women in Sports for Social Change

Hi ladies,

Welcome to another double issue of WISSC on this Wednesday night - combining May/June issues because, well life. I'm a one-woman show and this is a free newsletter, so you're welcome:)

Below is packed with stories and resources that I hope you find helpful, and appreciate so many of you sharing things going on at the intersection of sports and social change.

It was great to see so many of you at our local spring happy hour in DC recently, which also prompted a generous offer for all of you across the country, reach out to me if you want a friends & family discount code to the current FIFA Club World Cup games (thx Alex Sopko!).

Keep connecting and sharing via our private LinkedIn group and consider forwarding this newsletter to a friend to help spread the word and sign-up to receive next month’s issue.

Thanks,
Mandy

WISSC DC ladies at spring 2025 HH

Thanks to Women in Sports for Social Change from FIFA, Washington Nationals Philanthropies, Monumental Sports, Events DC, Special Olympics and more!

This month's 3 things:

1. One of the best things I watched & one of the best things I listened to:

Because it's a double issue - watched: "Save" The E60 doc on Katie Meyer. "In 2022, Stanford soccer captain Katie Meyer died by suicide just three months shy of graduation. In the aftermath, her family searched for answers and began a fight for change." I met her parents last year during an advocacy day here in DC for Athletes for Hope. They're incredible advocates amidst unimaginable loss and as we wrapped mental health month in May, worth a watch. Listened - to LeBron, Steve Nash and Luka chop it up on a recent 'Mind The Game' podcast episode about the state of youth sports. If you haven't seen the report from Luka's Foundation, check it out here.

2. Opportunities, Jobs and so much more:

Speaking of youth sports, if, like me, you love all-things SBYD (sports based youth development... although unlikely I need to define that acronym for those of you reading this), get involved in a town hall near you! Laureus sport for good recently held town halls in Chicago and Atlanta, and have one upcoming in New Orleans on July 1. The team at Project Play is holding a Community Conversation on Youth Sports in Kansas City on August 19, and last but not least, hoping to see many familiar faces and meet new ones here in Washington, D.C. at the Youth Sports Town Hall next Thursday, June 26 (disclosure: Fight For Children is a client of MNM Strategy).

Oh, and if you're in LA, bookmark Saturday June 28 for the Day of Play Block Party!

Another opportunity - DICK’S Sporting Goods Foundation and LISC are once again calling for applications for Places to Play with grants of up to $100,000.

ICYMI, Major League Baseball is hiring a Director, Corporate Communications, Social Responsibility in NYC ($115,000 - $140,000)

Also, last week was the Green Sports Alliance annual summit, which included the release of two playbooks for the industry, one on Strategy Development and one on Revenue Generation, you can download the playbooks here.

Getting ahead of July, if you're looking for inspiration and connection, head to Vegas for the 3rd annual She's Got Time Summit on July 14-15, founded by WNBA icon Swin Cash.

Oh, one more DC opportunity, next Friday morning, June 27, there are still a few spots left to join The Team's second annual engaged athlete forum - featuring thought-provoking discussions that showcase the next generation of civic-minded athletic leaders. RSVP here.

3. WISSC Woman of Wisdom:

Tori Ramataboee is the Founder of Paleza, a new small business that celebrates women’s sports. Paleza draws inspiration from the Sesotho word "Palesa," meaning "flower." The name honors a special connection to Lesotho, where Tori served as a Peace Corps volunteer. Her background in using sport as a tool for social change stretches across various contexts - she previously worked at the U.S. Soccer Foundation and Detroit Tigers, among others. Every purchase at Paleza reinvests directly into programs that help empower girls and women through sport.

HER WORDS OF ADVICE:

Tend to your mindset. Build practices that help you tune into your own feelings and intuition (journal, mindfulness, meditation) then make daily decisions that reinforce belief in yourself. Magic happens when you trust your gut and lean into the possibility of your own potential. You’ve got this.

HOW TO SUPPORT HER:

Connect with her new venture at www.Paleza.com or on Insta @PalezaOfficial. Reach out to her directly if you're interested in exploring partnerships or want to put a bug in her ear for merch you must have.

Thanks for reading and for being a part of our WISSC community!
