W.I.S.S.C. Monthly Minute

3 things this month for Women in Sports for Social Change

Hi ladies,

On this 2nd Wednesday of the month, hope you all were able to participate in some form of celebration of the annual NGWSD (National Girls & Women in Sports Day) last week and also able to spend some time over the weekend immersed in the Olympics' Gold Zone (my new happy place).

My sincere thanks to those of you in Washington D.C. who joined us at our first happy hour of 2026 last month (stay tuned for Spring save-the-date soon) and in the meantime, hope that wherever you are in the world reading this, that you find some inspirational and helpful resources below, including from our latest WISSC Woman of Wisdom, the NBPA Foundation's Erika Swilley.

Thanks,
Mandy

This month's 3 things:

1. Best thing I read:

There's been no shortage of storylines during these Winter Olympics, but this perspective on knowing thyself as a takeaway from Lindsey Vonn's comeback and crash serving as "a reminder that women deserve to define their own limits" is worth your time (and also have to shout out an old media industry contact, Alyssa, who I worked with on Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria in 2017, on her also insightful piece from earlier in the weekend... still worth your time because you'll learn Vonn adopted a puppy named "Chance". Chef's Kiss!).

2. Opportunities:

There are still a few spots remaining to join us at the GW University Sports Philanthropy Summit hosted by Monumental Sports & Entertainment on Feb. 26th in downtown Washington D.C. Also, if you'll be at NBA All-Star this weekend, first good luck with navigating the traffic in LA (kidding not kidding...), second there are Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA community events at the Convention Center and you can support GirlTREK on Sunday, Feb. 15th in a 2-mile walk to support health and wellness. If you have other upcoming opportunities to pass along, don't forget you don't have to wait until next month's issue, you can share anytime over in our private WISSC LinkedIn group.

3. WISSC Woman of Wisdom:

Speaking of hoops this weekend, meet our woman of wisdom for February: Erika Swilley, Executive Director of the NBPA Foundation. You may have read about Erika in a recent issue of SBJ, where she was featured, including her team's impactful "fine(d) & philanthropic' campaign.

HER ROLE:

"My role is to guide our players in shaping their philanthropic strategies and leveraging our matching grant program to elevate their impact. Each player has a powerful platform, and I help them tap into it in the most responsible, authentic, and meaningful way."

HER ADVICE TO WISSC READERS:

"I read an unforgettable article years ago—Are You Living Your Eulogy or Your Résumé? by Arianna Huffington—and it has stayed with me. My advice to women is to live your eulogy: lead with authenticity, purpose, and who you truly are."

HOW YOU CAN HELP HER:

Learn more about the impact of the work she leads on their foundation website here, (and my personal two cents: if you happen to do charitable work with an NBA player, help ensure they're aware of the opportunity for matching funds!)

Thanks for reading and being a part of this community.
