Women in Sports for Social Change - issue 7

W.I.S.S.C. Monthly Minute

5 things this month for Women in Sports for Social Change

Hi Ladies!

Hope everyone is staying cool, reading this issue no. 7 of Women in Sports for Social Change in some A/C or poolside. There is a lot happening this summer, and we’re fast approaching a 1-year milestone come August, this community is now 150+ strong!

As many people are traveling in August, the Q3 in-person happy hour (for those in Washington D.C.) will be post-Labor Day in early-mid September, details TBD, and in the meantime, for everyone, worldwide, I’m sourcing what you’re watching, listening to and reading via this brief 3-question form.

A WISSC woman said to me at a conference the other week that they’d love to see more recommendations of things in this space to check out, and while I have my own two cents, crowdsourcing from all of you could make for a great annual list of top picks, which I’ll curate and publish in a future issue.

Thanks to those who are sharing their own updates between monthly issues via our private LinkedIn group and please consider forwarding this newsletter to a friend to help spread the word so they can sign-up to receive next month’s issue.

Thanks,
Mandy

This month's 5 things:

1. One of the best things I read AND watched:

I went down a rabbit hole researching and reading this new report on the unmet demand for women’s sports merch - literally a 4 BILLION-DOLLAR market opportunity, with highlights in this MarketingBrew article. As someone who once worked for a sporting goods brand many moons ago and had to promote a line by a major league that felt a bit too “shrink it and pink it” to be authentic for most fans, I’ve been waiting for this gap to be filled (alongside waiting for Philly to get a WNBA team, but I digress). Let’s hope both happen sooner than later.

Also, I listened to a great podcast, episode 215 of “Heads Talk” with the one and only ‘Dr. Ash’, former Chief of Sports Diplomacy at the U.S. State Department and current, overall incredible human in this W.I.S.S.C. community, who continues to tap her vast experience to leverage the power of sports to drive change. Worth an hour of your time. Listen here.

2. What to watch for in the month ahead:

The ESPYs air tomorrow night, July 11th, on ABC and will feature highlights of the 10th annual ESPN Humanitarian Awards, as well as special honors including awards for courage, perseverance and service to former NFL safety Steve Gleason, hoops coach Dawn Staley and Prince Harry, respectively. Read more.

Also happening this week, there’s the Uninterrupted Film Festival in LA, with shorts handpicked by LeBron James, Naomi Osaka and Joel Embiid, and in Germany, alongside the Euros, there’s a forum uniting the world of football for good.

Watch out next week for two new sure-to-be fire podcasts, with ‘Sportly’ by Kavitha Davidson dropping on July 15th and ‘Good Game with Sarah Spain’ dropping on July 17th, and there will also no doubt be plenty of happenings in Phoenix during WNBA All-Star week.

Our friends at Laureus and Sport for Good in Atlanta will be holding a virtual workshop on July 24th - Sports Can Battle Racism, with tools and action steps to use sport to help combat racism. RSVP: https://buff.ly/4bvVQru

Lastly, of course we will all be watching the upcoming Paris Olympics and then Paralympics, and also can’t wait to hear what comes of the 2nd annual Angel City Equity Summit on July 29th.

3. Opportunities to consider:

Speaking of Laureus, I love receiving emails when the subject line reads: “Which brands are using their power for good?”, which hopefully many of you also received as Laureus and SportsPro are now taking submissions for their annual Sport for Good Index. Submit your brand here by August 18th.

Also, Wasserman and SBJ have launched a new Collective Futures Cohort, an amazing new opportunity for 20 women leaders driving the industry forward, with a deadline to apply at the end of the month.

The Dick’s Sporting Goods Foundation and LISC have a new Places to Play initiative that provides $50 - $100K in funding to create and/or renovate spaces for youth sports.

4. Jobs to share:

Our friends at Leveling the Playing Field asked for help in spreading the word about their career openings (all with salary ranges listed) and also, Soccer Without Borders has several openings (salary ranges listed).

BSE Global (Brooklyn Nets & NY Liberty) is looking for a Manager of Community Relations, (salary range $70-80K).

5. Woman to watch:

Lastly, a reminder you can submit a ‘woman of wisdom’ for consideration to be featured in a future newsletter to 150+ women in sports for social change across the world. Editra, Megan, Renata… who’s got next?!

Thanks for reading and for being a part of our WISSC community!
